Obssesion with Disposable Diapers in Ghana

The disposable diaper is convenient, use it and toss it. No need to soak and wash it like the cloth diaper.
When I was in Ghana in 2010, many women were opting for the disposable diaper because it was easy and I guess also "cool" to have on your baby.

In the long run it is expensive though. Some women in Ghana cannot afford the pampers as it is called. Please stick to cloth diapering as we use to do it in the olden days. The napkin with the pin is risky but it still works. The are more advance child friendly versions now or you can go DIY and make your own.

Some women have resulted to selling and buying the nappies individually instead of the whole pack. Whats the point really? You buy 1 single diaper, use it and toss it and then what.

I know the trading of diapers have created jobs for some women in Ghana which is a really good thing.
More jobs can be created if we can make cloth diapers that are affordable using organic material found at home. The possibilities are endless.

On that note here are some pros for Ghanaian mothers to use cloth diapers

  • They are cheaper than huggies or pampers. The only cost is for soap and water to wash it. You can use one cloth diaper for up to 3 children.
  • Convenience and comfortable for the children
  • Good on the environment. In Ghana we do not have the recycling abilities to turn out trash into cash. Disposable diapers takes like 5000 plus yrs to discompose. This is not good for Ghana to be feeling our land fills with this stuff
  • Less diaper-rash; cloth diapered babies tend to have less diaper-rash, because natural cotton fibers breathe more easily
  •  Cloth diapered children tend to potty-train earlier, because the cloth tends to hold moisture closer to baby’s skin

So please my fellow Gh mama's lets stick to cloth diapering.

Things Ghanaian Parents say when Upset
